Lunch with a view

I went out for a family lunch to celebrate one of my sons birthday. We had a lovely meal and the weather was just perfect, The view from this cafe  has  amazing views over Hobart, so we were happy that it was a sunny day so we had a perfect view.

The cafe is on the site of the Mount Nelson Signal Station. The cafe itself is in the original head signalman's house which was built in 1897. The signal station was built in 1811 and was the first signal station built in Tasmania. Flags were used to send signals down the river to Port Arthur, a convict goal, and also to Hobart town. In 1831 a three armed semaphore replaced the use of flags, this system was capable of sending 666 different signal codes. Then in 1838 this was replaced by a 24 metre high six armed semaphore that could send over 900 000 separate signals.

The signal station also has a memorial to Truganini, this is a memorial dedicated to the Tasmanian Aboriginal people and their descendants.
